PC88 battery replacement

Monday, April 5th, 2004 by Olivier

PC88 screwsPffew! Successfully replaced the battery inside my faithful PC88 keyboard! Found the instructions on a newsgroup. The guy was not sure if it was a CR2032 battery, I can confirm it was. I can also confirm there were a lot of screws…

Maybe some people will see some shapes in this picture, just like stars in the sky. Am I a poet or what? They kind of look like bees too.

Paul Rand

What’s the link between ABC, IBM, UPS, and NeXT ?

It’s the same person who designed their logo : Paul Rand.

Paul

I don’t like very much the green he uses, but Steve Jobs gave him a hug.

Cindy’s birthday

Sunday, March 21st, 2004 by Olivier

Shoes left outside Cindy's birthday partyTonight was Cindy’s birthday party. People had to leave their shoes outside. Next time, I should ask the neighbor if he wouldn’t mind hiding all of them in his condo… Or rather all of them but the ungliest pairs. Should be fun…

I strategically placed my CDs around the stereo (for some reason, we don’t use an iPod linked to the receiver yet), and it worked. They played a Supertramp CD, and not Cindy’s stuff… Though after 10 or 11 tunes, Supertramp was accused not to be modern, and then they switched to some Hong Kong music. Faye Something. Which led us to the always embarassing karaoke session… At least in winter, the windows are not opened, and we don’t get clappings from the street, like last summer…

Canadian citizenship

Wednesday, March 17th, 2004 by Olivier

Got my citizenship today. We were 56 people, from 32 countries. Not much change for me. I’ll be able to vote and to have a passport, which is useful to go to the US - they take less time to check than if you’re French. So I now have 2 nationalities. I wonder what is the maximum nationalities a person can get in a lifetime.

Maléfices

J’avais passé de longues heures à pratiquer ce jeu de rôle. Le web n’existait pas à l’époque. Ca fait drôle de reprendre contact avec ce jeu via le web.

More about orkut

Friday, February 13th, 2004 by Olivier

Oh, I forgot to tell you… To join orkut, you need a photo with very precise specifications, otherwise they won’t accept you. So please don’t ask me to invite you if you don’t have your photo ready yet. Thanks.

Olivier Allan Hans

Now seriously, is it Allan or Hans who had the idea?…

At the supermarket

Thursday, February 12th, 2004 by Olivier

Last night at the supermarket the checkout operator asked me “anything else?”. I should have said yes and go back pick up more stuff, but the guy behind me in the line was muscular.

orkut

Wednesday, February 11th, 2004 by Olivier

I’ve been invited at orkut, an online community of trusted friends. In affiliation with Google. You can join only by invitation. So if you are my friend and want to be part of it, just ask me… The fields in the profiles there are a bit similar to these on our homepages at Kebawe: favorite movie, occupation, photo, etc. But while our homepages only link to the other Kebawe members, orkut is a much much bigger network.

Music blog project

Friday, February 6th, 2004 by Olivier

I may develop something enabling me automatically post to a web site everything I play on the keyboard. Well, not everything, it would ideally be triggered by some MIDI, maybe a special chord. The thing is I don’t want to have anythign to touch on the computer, it has to be very easy, just seat in front of the keyboard, play, and that’s it. Then something on the computer would build a MP3 and post it to some sort of music blog. With the keyboard, it should be easy to trigger the recording by a MIDI chord (a weird one that won’t happen during normal playing…), or some other MIDI event. But for people without MIDI, this would not work, so maybe they would have to click something on their computer to start the recording (which is in fact a posting), which is less cool. Since my recordings would suck, I hope that some other talented people would use the system (email me…) If you want to help coding it (for Mac, and web site in PHP/Perl/MySQL) please contact me too.

So, to summarize, here is how it would work: you get back from work, you turn on your synth or guitar, and you play, inspired by the wonderful day you had in the office. Then your web site is updated with a link to the MP3, and the date. Absolutely no comment, no text. Maybe people would be allowed to comment, that’s a detail anyway, it would be part of the configuration if the project goes public.

JustOneMoreThing.com on /.

Saturday, January 31st, 2004 by Olivier

Not yet on the front page, but there is a little thread about JustOneMoreThing.com on /.

Sorry, we had to shut down JustOneMoreThing.com, the original fake Steve Jobs' blog. Please beware of tasteless clones. Seriously.
